For years, we shipped almost all ICT hardware from the Netherlands to East Africa because much was not available locally or was extremely expensive. Fortunately, that has since changed and we are purchasing as much hardware as possible in Kenya and Tanzania. It’s faster and we can call on warranty should the need arise. In addition, it stimulates the local economy.
However, not everything is available. Our ElimuPi servers are still bought and assembled in the Netherlands after which we send them by air freight. The servers are small in volume, so there are 40 copies in these two boxes. We had not agreed that they would be brought to our office on the back of a motorcycle, and even though it went without any problems, we are going to send a car next time. And we purchased “this side up” stickers.
The tablets we use are supplied by Lenovo Kenya and installed in the office and equipped with educational software from DALS. The whole team is involved when quantities are large.
