DEAN was founded in 2001 as Viafrica with the objective of using IT to promote development in sub-Saharan Africa. Based on a concrete request for help from secondary schools in Tanzania, we started facilitating computer classrooms in 2002.
Around 2018, we switched from computer labs to using tablets in the classroom. This allows us to support education more broadly and generate more impact.
Over the years, we have also been involved in various projects with an ICT component for strategic advice and implementation.
From the first project onwards, we consciously decided to make the school the project owner and also ask for a financial contribution. We continue to apply this principle that contributes to ownership and involvement to this day.
We also aim to fund the operational costs of projects from our own income as much as possible. These are contributions from the schools and income from the PC Donation campaign.
Good education is necessary for East Africa’s development. It ensures the growth of a middle class and increases individual opportunities. With the right use of digital learning tools, education improves. DEAN guides schools in using ICT to improve their education.
