In the 20-plus years that DEAN has been working in the Kilimanjaro region of Tanzania, the effect of climate change is there for all to see with the snowy summit of Kilimanjaro disappearing. In addition to the global processes affecting it, local deforestation is also a major influence on local climate and hydrology. Together with Shambadarasa, we are going to roll out a reforestation project for that reason.
We will begin planting 30,000 trees along riverbanks, on community land and around schools. Led by a forest ranger, we will go with residents of local communities and students from schools to plant the trees. Part of this project is an educational program through which we raise awareness about the proper care of nature. We do this based on the ElimuLab practice days that DEAN has been conducting with schools for several years. The underlying idea is that awareness about your impact on your environment should be part of other 21st-century skills such as critical thinking, creativity, problem-solving, and so on. This awareness is needed to make responsible choices and restore nature where possible.
Initial funding has been pledged by Triodos Bank and we hope to receive commitments for the total budget in the coming weeks.
